In order to better understand the persistence of the wage gap between women and men despite changes in educational attainment for women, this study examines whether returns to education vary by sex and if so, what effect the proportion of college graduates who are women is estimated to have on the difference between women's and men's average wages. I confirm prior findings that earnings are positively influenced by education and negatively affected by being female. I also find that the increase in female college completion rates corresponds with the decline in the gender wage gap, providing a basis for the argument that education policies can be used to promote wage equity. |
