Uncle Sam, holding a sword in his left hand, is attempting to prevent Jefferson Davis from leaving the Union with several items. The items in Jefferson Davis' hands are Charleston, Mobile, New Orleans, Norfolk (in the form of a cannon) and the U.S. Treasury. He also has a couple of rifles in his hands. Uncle Sam is saying "Just so, Jeff" And more to." Jefferson Davis is replying "I only want to be let alone." There is a Union flag behind Uncle Sam. Fort Pickens, with a Union flag, and Fort Sumter, without a Union flag, appear in the backgound. Fort Pickens remained in the Union despite the fact that it was located in Florida. A federal (bald) eagle holding a federal shield and an olive branch in its left talons and a dead rattlesnake in its right talons appears on the right side of the envelope. The words "Yankee Doodle is the tune; Americans delight in; It'll do to whistle, sing or play; And just the thing for fightin'" appear below the first image. |
