Title: Memorial to Col. Ellsworth
Description: Scene of Colonel Ellsworth's death after he tore down a Confederate flag during the occupation of Alexandria, Virginia. Artist appears to have taken some license in the depiction. It is unlikely that Col. Ellsworth would be out of uniform to the degree depicted in the image. A poem by G. Gumpert "Thou noble warrior, young and brave, sleep sweetly in thy silent grave, for millions praise thy name. Thy courage ne'er shall be forgot, a nation weeps, thy mournful lot, adds but unto thy fame." appears below the image. Ellsworth was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln.
