| Title: | DOES INFERIOR QUALITY OF HOUSING HAVE A DETERRENT EFFECT ON FERTILITY IN TAIWAN? |

| Abstract: | Recently, non-replacement fertility in Asian countries has attracted considerable attention. Many studies have attempted to understand the factors that contribute to low fertility. Surprisingly, housing factors have been given relatively little attention. This paper uses data from the Taiwan Social Change Survey to examine the relationship between housing quality and fertility. In order to isolate the effects of housing quality from other confounding factors, I use multivariate models. Results from this study indicate that homeownership has a statistically significant positive effect on womens reproductive behavior, and living in apartment type housing has a statistically significant negative effect on their reproductive behavior. Housing size per person also has a statistically significant negative effect; however, its marginal impact is extremely small. |
